Take Aways from Xande Seminar

Nick Burke's picture

What are your top five take-aways from the Xande Seminar?

For me:

  1. Reiteration of the importance of knee-elbow in all positions
  2. Gripping the collar is a Good Thing
  3. The sick guard recovery from the smash pass
  4. The sweet sweep from deep half guard
  5. Pushing the hips down from guard top and focusing your weight on them.

Old School

Check out this old Gracie video. The armbar at 3:18 is pretty slick, even if the guy wasn't resisting.

"Sports" Jiu-Jitsu vs "Practical" Jiu-Jitsu

Nick Burke's picture

So it seems there are almost three sorts of flavors of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu out there. One is the Gi, which seems to be very sports centric. That is to say, it's the most removed from practical use in a fight. Then there's no-gi, which seems to be middling useful in a fight -- no grips and a general tendency to allow more submissions such as knee-bars and ankle locks. Finally, there's the MMA/BJJ, which seems to be the most closely related to fighting.

What do you all think the benefits of each are?

Caio Terra Seminar

If the devil is in fact in the details than I spent the weekend with him. Me and the Five Rings Crew (Tom, Eric, Louisa, and Greg) were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to attend both days of the Caio Terra seminar which was hosted by our friends from Gracie Technics Oregon. My fellow training partners knew that I had been looking forward to this opportunity for quite some time, as I have spent countless hours pouring over the many techniques featured on Caio’s recently released half guard DVD. Caio began the seminar in unique fashion, first he lined us all up by belt rank so that he could better judge the students in regards to ability and understanding. Second he threw out 5 different techniques and allowed the students to choose which one he would teach by a majority vote.
