Feeling Old School Today

Rylan's picture

If you haven't seen Choke clear your schedule and have a seat.  Watch a huge comercial for Rickson, some of the best unintentional comedy put on film, and Yuki Nakai defines balls.

The 10/10/10 of training

Michael Amador's picture

It's funny how important tidbits of pop up in your head. Chris Williams once told us in a CU class about his concept of successful training being in 1/3rds... For every 30 grapples you should have a proper balance of 10 victories, 10 losses, and 10 draws.

The meaning of "Oss" - a few have asked

A few folks have asked. I was first introduced to the word down at Saulo's place.

Here is what I found on a Sherdog string:

Abusing the Rules Or Tough as Nails?

Rylan's picture

I saw a discussion about this on another site and thought I would get your opinions.  One of the best BJJ matches I have ever seen is 2004 championship between Jacare and Roger Gracie.  should Roger have won because he broke Jacare's arm and without being under the limmitations of round times would have probably finished him?  Did Jacare only win because he could run away and let the time run out as he was up on points?  What say you?

Video Dissection: Abmar Barbosa vs. Kron Gracie at 2010 Pan American Brazilian

Nick Burke's picture

1:30: I love the De La Riva guard , and Kron refuses to be swept. He falls on his butt but hops back up again.

2:40 Anyone have any idea what's going on at 2:40? Some kind of collapsed De La Riva?

3:27 talk about a tenacious and toothy guard, good lord.

3:35 .. and then comes this beautiful beautfil sweep.

5:25 Fear the X-Pass! (That one is for you, Coach Eric! ;)

5:40 But Kron too has a tenacious and toothy guard.

Old School

Check out this old Gracie video. The armbar at 3:18 is pretty slick, even if the guy wasn't resisting.

What does BJJ look like? :D

I'm trying to replace the current (lame) main pic on the wikipedia BJJ page...

If you have a sec, take a look at these pictures and let me know which one you think looks better to represent the art.

Caio Terra Seminar

Tom Oberhue's picture

caio_seminar

If the devil is in fact in the details than I spent the weekend with him. Me and the Five Rings Crew (Tom, Eric, Louisa, and Greg) were fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to attend both days of the Caio Terra seminar which was hosted by our friends from Gracie Technics Oregon. My fellow training partners knew that I had been looking forward to this opportunity for quite some time, as I have spent countless hours pouring over the many techniques featured on Caio’s recently released half guard DVD. Caio began the seminar in unique fashion, first he lined us all up by belt rank so that he could better judge the students in regards to ability and understanding. Second he threw out 5 different techniques and allowed the students to choose which one he would teach by a majority vote.
