Dear Neighbors,

Five Rings Jiu Jitsu and Fitness as begun a community outreach and educational program called the Safety Series. The Safety Series is meant to teach people of all ages and abilities the basics of self defense and safety. Topics we are working on are:

  • Anti-bullying strategies
  • Stranger danger awareness
  • Verbal de-escalation skills
  • Basic self defense techniques

As I was meeting with a Washington County Sheriff Community Outreach Specialist the area that tends to be a blind spot with many neighborhoods is disaster readiness.

“Knowing what to do in the first hours of a disaster response (after an earth quake, ice storm, flood, etc.) may help you save a life, reduce the severity of possible injuries, and reduce the amount of damage the neighborhood sustains.”

I’m reaching out to people in my neighborhood for two reasons:

  1.        I want to be a better neighbor and know my neighbors.
  2.        Increase my family’s and my neighborhood’s preparedness and readiness for a disaster.

This is 100% voluntary. No pressure. The intent is not to create distress or paranoia, but to be proactive and solution-driven. This is a simple call to action.

What is required?

  • A little of your time and your willingness to collaborate
  • To read and learn the 9 basics steps of what to do immediately after a disaster
  • Fill out the neighborhood skills and equipment inventory
  • Attend a meeting with the Washington County Sheriff’s Community Liaison to give us a crash course on disaster preparedness (to be setup once we have an idea of who is participating).

If you’re interested in participating in this effort, please let me know. Once I get a head count I look to organize an intro meeting / orientation.

In good health,

Tom
